Location and Importance of Yavuz Sultan Selim Bridge

The Yavuz Sultan Selim Bridge is a colossal engineering marvel located on the northern side of the Bosporus, facing the Black Sea. Known as the Third Bosphorus Bridge, this structure is named after Yavuz Sultan Selim, the ninth Sultan of the Ottoman Empire and the first Ottoman caliph. The bridge holds strategic importance due to its location. It connects the Garipçe neighborhood in the Sarıyer district on the European side with the Poyrazköy district in the Beykoz area on the Asian side. Built to significantly ease Istanbul's traffic, the bridge is crucial not only for urban transportation but also for international road transport. By redirecting heavy vehicle traffic away from the city center, it has greatly alleviated the city's internal traffic. Additionally, its proximity to the Black Sea opens up various other routes.

A Structure Among the World’s Best

The Yavuz Sultan Selim Bridge is a project that stands out not only for Turkey but also globally. With a width of 59 meters, it holds the title of the widest bridge in the world. Additionally, with a tower height reaching 322 meters, it has the tallest tower among cable-stayed bridges. It is also recorded as having the second tallest tower among all bridges worldwide. The bridge’s main span measures exactly 1,408 meters, which is considered the longest span for bridges with rail systems, globally. Furthermore, it ranks ninth among all suspension bridges. The fact that such a massive structure is built to accommodate both rail and road transportation represents a significant engineering achievement.

Construction Process and Opening

The construction process of the Yavuz Sultan Selim Bridge was both swift and impressive. The foundation was laid in May 2013, and the bridge was completed in just 27 months, achieving a remarkable success. Built at a cost of approximately ₺8.5 billion Turkish liras, the bridge was officially opened with a grand ceremony on August 26, 2016, by then-President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. Thousands of workers and engineers were involved in the construction process. The bridge, built using advanced engineering techniques and cutting-edge technology, has gone down in history as one of Turkey’s and the world’s important projects. Today, thousands of local and foreign vehicles use this bridge to travel quickly and safely between two continents.
